I really don't see a problem with the pumping. ~20 pumps divided by 6 shots = 3.33 (repeating, of course) pumps per shot, and your average 2k or 3k takes 3-4 per shot. Big Blasts take ~10 per shot. If you don't want to pump, get a Maverick/Tek6/Mustang Six/whatever.
The point of the hornet is that you can carry it...completely ready to go...and fire off 6 shots just by pulling the trigger 6 times. Or, you can fire one shotgun blast of 6 shots. Or, a few singles and a shotgun. Whatever.
The
real problem with the Hornet is that it is complicated and unreliable:
1. It's semi-hard to disassemble, and quite hard to reassemble until you get the hang of it. Then, it's not so bad.
2. The blast chambers easily spring "leaks." Actually, it's just that the valve doesn't close completely. But, the point is, they break easily and are hard/impossible to repair.*
3. There are some issues with repeatedly firing the same barrel.
So, is it a good primary? No, not outdoors because it has bad range. May be good indoors.
Is it a good sidearm? No. Sidearms should be infinitely dependable...thus why they are usually springers.
Is it a good secondary, compensating for a long-range yet low ROF primary? Yes.
In other words, it serves the exact same niche that Badger's Powerclip does. For example:
- Badger and I having a primaries stand off in CTF? We exchanged about 4 rounds each. Doomsayer and SM1.5K. We just kept getting closer and closer. Then he hosed me down with the Powerclip. Clever trick Badgie, I won't fall for it again.
Of course, one could carry an automatic instead of a hornet, like Badger. I've also seen Twitch carry a Magstrike.
But, it's really all a matter of preference. Personally, I seem to suck at modding Magstrike clips. I'm going to try my hand at an RF20. But, if I can fix problem #3, I may very well go with the minimized hornet.
It's really all a matter of personal preference and (to a lesser degree) modding abilities, though.*Some can be repaired simply by spraying silicone down the barrels and into the blast chambers, but that doesn't always work...yet it is the only possible solution
