So, I went to my first "official" war on Saturday, along with four other members of Steel City Nerf (SCN).
We actually got to the war site before Groove, and let me tell you it was a sight to my noob-eyes when I saw Groove walking down the path, wearing his ray-bans and carrying a bag, Guru sitting atop it.
I had just called Groove a few minutes before, to let him know we had arrived and make sure it was the right place (I only got voicemail, by the way). I remember saying “Here he is…” And then it was silence until Groove set his bag down, then came over and introduced to himself to us, asking our names, and shaking our hands one at a time. He thanked us for coming, then offered to show us (and the several others that arrived shortly after Groove) around the field, on account of the fact that we had never been there before.
For the first two rounds, SCN and “Team Narnia” were each placed on at team until everyone could get an idea of everyone else’s abilities. In the second round, I was able to run right up to Ryan “McNumbers,” barrel tap him, and run out unscathed. I also managed o be fairly aware of my surroundings and dodged quite a few darts thrown my way. I also got the drop on Groove, but wasn’t able to get away. It also felt cool to run around with OMC while the rest of our team was elsewhere.
My personal coolest moment was when I rushed to flank (or even get behind) a group of about ten that was made up one side of the force pinning my team into a corner. I had already been hit twice, and was tired of essentially wasting darts in a long-range standoff as I attempted to hit Groove and others standing in line raining darts down onto our team. I noticed that the opposing team had moved to far to my right, so I dashed up the hill to their right flank, firing indiscriminately from all four of my SM2k’s barrels. I didn’t hit anyone (as usual), but suddenly I realized that the whole crowd and turned to run after me. I skipped the reload phase and simply ran as fast as I could. Looking back, I was awed at the sight of 10 nerfers running after me, and realized that I maybe just given my team the chance to get several hits since everyone was now facing towards me and away from them. I looked to the hill they should have been running up…to se no one. Shortly after that, some people caught up to and hit me I was he first to get out that round, but it is still my personal #1 highlight of the day.
The best part of the whole war, however, was how well SCN did. Oh, we were far from great (well, except Josh), but I think we did alright considering we were facing the likes of Groove, OMC, Ryan, Capt. Slug, and more. And, from what I remember, there were at least five Crossbows (maybe even seven) and two +Bows being used at the war. If you’ve never faced a ‘bow being wielded properly before, let me tell you that it’s as good as they say; I got hit right between the eyes once. Fortunately, I was wearing safety glasses that covered that portion of my face.
What I’m not proud of is my accuracy. I only got one hit when my target was more than 20 feet away, and even a close shot was far from a guaranteed hit. And, I didn’t do much of anything in Gunslinger Heaven except distract some people from Badger (my teammate those rounds). I only got five hits all day, while another member of SCN got six hits in a single round.
It was still one awesome day, though, which was rounded out by the purchase of a Warthog (if you’re reading this, Renegade: no, you can’t have it), DT3, and Electric Eel for a total of $45 (and no shipping). At the hotel that night, my feet hurt with every step I took and I still have a lot of pain when I twist my ankles to the left or right, but I can’t wait to do it all over again.
