2009-2010 Winter Mod Contest

Ok fellas, I want to get this started quickly so modders can be working on these through the holiday break or between semesters or whatever your situation is. Here is the much anticipated and much requested Homemade modding contest. We will have two divisions, a pistol division and a primary division.  Each will have a separate prize, each will be judged separately. Yes you can enter one or both categories.

The basic rules are these:

Submissions have no restrictions on materials, as long as the materials are commercially obtainable. These will be judged from the standpoint of reproducibility so cost and availability of materials is important.

Submissions can certainly include parts of commercially made nerf and related blasters, but do not go overboard.  If you strip off the shell from a Nerf gun and duck tape it up and try to pass it off as homemade that will not fly. You will get a score, but it will be pitiful.

All the usual no-no's apply; no CO2, no paintball or airsoft ammo. These should fire Nerf ammo or stefans. Battery power (i.e. Vulcan) is ok, hand-held bike pump is ok, just keep in mind cost.

Submissions should be war-practical. A 6-foot PVC sabot cannon is not practical.

How pretty the gun looks, will have some reflection on score, but not much. Paint it if you want make it look clean, but paint jobs will not be scored in this particular contest.

Ok, a quick few examples of what not to do:
Doomsayer? No, not a homemade, too much original blaster in the mod. Not a good submission.
+Bow? Yes, a homemade, but somewhat expensive and hard to make. Not a good submission.

Points scored for:
Practicality (for war)
Innovation (something never before seen)
Cheapness to build
Clever design (interesting trigger assembly or something like that)
and Clever use of leftover parts

More details to come as we hammer it out. Get started the end of the contest will be Sunday Feb 7th at midnight Eastern Standard Time. That is 8 weeks, plenty of time.

Prizes! The prize for the pistol class will be a Nerf or related off-the-shelf pistol of $20 or less, NIB. The primary will be a Nerf or related off-the-shelf non-pistol of $40 or less NIB. I think a Vulcan can be purchased for $40 so that is a good number. So get to work! I will set up a special thread for submissions during January. Questions can come here to this thread, I am sure I am missing some details.

Oh yeah, submissions need the usual write-ups and pictures and stuff. lol. Post them in the Homemade section as you would normally do with a new write-up. We will link them in the contest thread.

Will you judge based on reproducibility? You seemed to have hinted at that in the +bow example, but mentioned nothing in the technical criteria.

How about originality of design? I.e. many homemades from polycarb just utilize the standard +bow handle, would that detract from the score? More than using a nerf handle?

Yes, reproducibility is a judging criteria. A +bow was an example of a homemade that while a very sophisticated design, may score low on the reproducibility side. If one were to, for example, streamline the +bow design so that a monkey could put one together, that may score higher in reproducibility.

Originality is an extremely important factor. If its been done and posted, then its not original.

hey dudes,

I hope everyone is busy working on their contest submissions. I will put up a thread shortly where you can post your links to your submissions. These mods should be posted in proper writeup form in the "Homemades" section as per usual and just a link thereto posted in the contest thread.

Be back to you shortly, keep working! Only a few short weeks left.
